Visual Perception & Visual Motor Skills

Visual Perception & Visual Motor Skills

Strong visual perception and visual-motor skills help children coordinate what they see with how they move their hands.

How We Can Help

Why is this important?

Strong visual perception and visual-motor skills help children coordinate what they see with how they move their hands. These skills are essential for:

  • Handwriting and drawing

  • Reading and writing accuracy

  • Maths and building tasks

  • Following instructions or completing sequences

Difficulties in this area can affect confidence, accuracy, and learning outcomes.

How OT can help

Occupational therapists support children in developing these skills by breaking tasks into manageable steps and making activities fun and motivating. Examples of OT strategies include:

  • Fine motor games and crafts: Tracing, puzzles, or building blocks

  • Copying and drawing exercises: Practising shapes, letters, and patterns to improve hand-eye coordination

  • Visual perception games: Activities that reinforce visual discrimination, spatial awareness, sequencing, and attention to detail

How this helps in everyday life

Through OT intervention, we aim to improve:

  • accuracy in writing, drawing, and completing worksheets

  • ability to copy instructions and follow visual sequences

  • independence and confidence in school and hobbies

How this skill can change as your child grows

  • Early childhood: Building basic hand-eye coordination through stacking, drawing, and simple puzzles

  • Primary school: Copying from the board, writing neatly, and completing more complex visual tasks

  • Secondary school: Completing structured notes, projects, and detailed assignments

How this skill can look at home, school, or in the community

  • Home: Drawing, crafts, following step-by-step recipes

  • School: Copying from whiteboard, completing worksheets accurately

  • Community: Building models, following visual directions for activities

Example

A child initially struggled to copy a simple shape from the board but, after guided practice with tracing and visual prompts, was able to replicate the shape accurately and independently.
